Are Solar Panels Worth It? The Honest 2026 Math

Solar is a great deal for some roofs and a bad deal for others. Here is how to tell which one you have, without a sales pitch.

Solar panels are worth it when you have a sunny, unshaded roof, high electricity rates, and plan to stay in the home at least through the payback period of roughly 8 to 14 years. They are a poor fit for heavily shaded roofs, very cheap electricity, or a move within a few years. Check your numbers with the free solar panel calculator.

When the answer is clearly yes

You pay over 20 cents per kilowatt-hour, your roof gets full sun most of the day, and you will stay in the home for a decade or more. That combination pays back in under 10 years and then prints savings for another 15.

Net metering that credits your surplus at the retail rate makes the case even stronger, because every kilowatt-hour your panels make is worth the full rate you would have paid.

When the answer is probably no

Heavy, all-day shade is the dealbreaker. Panels under trees or a north-facing roof in a cloudy climate may never produce enough to pay for themselves.

Very cheap electricity also weakens the case. At 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, the same system saves half as much per year and the payback stretches past 20 years. And if you will sell within five years, you will likely move before breaking even, though solar does add resale value.

How to decide for your roof

Run the calculator with honest inputs: your real bill, your real sun hours, and a per-watt cost from actual local quotes, not national averages. If the payback lands under 12 years, most homeowners are happy with the decision.

Then get three installer quotes and check the roof condition. A roof with less than 10 years of life left should be replaced before panels go on, since removing and reinstalling panels later is expensive.

Solar worth-it questions

Are solar panels worth it financially?

For most sunny US homes with average or high electricity rates, yes: payback of 8 to 14 years followed by a decade or more of near-free electricity. Shaded roofs and very cheap power are the main exceptions.

Do solar panels increase home value?

Yes. Studies consistently show owned solar systems add value at resale, roughly $4,000 to $6,000 per installed kilowatt in many markets. Leased systems are a different story and can complicate a sale.
